South African infrastructure for digital/computational research

Abstract

The South African National Research Network (SANReN) offers a high-speed network and networking services to the research and education community. In the presentation, a brief overview will be provided on what SANReN is, what it does and who are its beneficiaries. We also discuss SANReN’s projects, future plans and how the network is designed and build.

Bio

Precilla Mashaba is a Systems Administrator at South African National Research Network. She joined SANReN on 1 st of April 2023. Her responsibilities include looking after the SANReN services such as FileSender, Netsage, Eduroam as well as servers for network performance measurement and monitoring. Precilla holds a master’s degree in IT: Communication Networks and has more than 12 years’ experience in the field.

Dr Kasandra Pillay is a principal engineer at the CSIR, in the South African National Research Network’s (SANReN’s) Service Development and Incubation (SDI) team. She is co-ordinating the Performance Enhancement and Response Team (PERT) within the National Integrated Cyberinfrastructure System (NICIS). A core responsibility of this team is to work with researchers to move their large datasets faster between local and international sites. Her qualifications include a PhD (Engineering Management) from University of Johannesburg, MEng and BEng Hons (Technology Management) from the University of Pretoria, and a BSc Engineering (Electronics) from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She is registered as a Professional Engineer (Pr. Eng.) with the Engineering Council of South Africa.
